There are various
types of syllabuses.
These are divided in
to two main types.
Process- oriented and product oriented (white,1988).
Functional-Notional syllabus is grouped under product
oriented syllabuses.
The two syllabuses under product oriented are structural/grammatical and functional-notional syllabuses.
Structural/grammatical
approach is focused on the structure
or the form of
the language.
It points out how the utterances are formed.
It is traditional model presented new items in relatively isolated form, and practiced in
increasingly contextualized situations,
but functional-notional syllabus approach is the reverse of
structural. It is communicative and is the student centered
