functional-notional syllabus

There are various types of syllabuses.
These are divided in to two main types.
Process- oriented and product oriented (white,1988).
Functional-Notional syllabus is grouped under product oriented syllabuses.
The two syllabuses under product oriented are structural/grammatical and functional-notional syllabuses.
Structural/grammatical approach is focused on the structure or the form of the language.
It points out how the utterances are formed.
It is traditional model presented new items in relatively isolated form, and practiced in increasingly contextualized  situations, but functional-notional  syllabus approach is the reverse of structural. It is communicative and is the student centered
